Using Google Maps to illustrate a student's route from their home to school.
Brief Rundown Of Lesson:
Students will use Google Maps and learn how to get directions, take screen shots of the different parts of their journey and present it in a clear, concise and descriptive way in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.
Reasons Why We Chose This Topic:
Google Maps is an intuitive website with a shallow learning curve so it will suit a one 40 minute class period. We choose to get the students to present their route from home to school in a PowerPoint as this will introduce or re-introduce presentation skills and also image
editing tools such as Print Screen and Cropping to get the sections of their map in to PowerPoint. It should be a fun and interesting lesson for the students and will be relate to their own lives and make the students more aware of where they live in relation to parts of Hong Kong.
Potential Difficulties:
Information overload for the students. Students not knowing their gmail address or password. Not enough time to finish in class. Students not knowing their address!
Pre-requisite Knowledge
Before this lesson, students should have knowledge on: 1. Using the internet to access Google Maps
2. Basics of PowerPoint
3. Where they live and where their school is(!)
4. Have a gmail account
Objectives:
After the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Use Google Maps to find directions from A to B.
2. Take a Print Screen on their computer.
3. Paste Print Screens in to PowerPoint.
4. Crop images in PowerPoint.
General teaching ideas:
We would think backchaining would take a key role in introducing the topic to students. We will show them a completed PowerPoint with a route from the teacher's home to school at the start of class. We will also be using variation theory by showing them different views of the route map (e.g. satellite, terraine view). We would also like to encourage the students to create different route maps for site-seeing in Hong Kong.
